Mike Evangelist was a product designer on a team at Apple charged with developing DVD-burning software. How often do we make things harder than they need to be? When you can't think of a way to make something easier, pivot your thinking to start at zero. When you shift your mindset, the question changes from, “how can I work harder to accomplish more?” to, “how am I making it harder than it needs to be?”. Is there a shortcut? Can you repurpose the work you have already done? Has someone else already faced this challenge? It is amazing how many simple solutions reveal themselves when we begin to look for them. Instead of asking, "why is this so hard?" ask, "what if this could be easy?". In our society, we praise hard work, but finding an easier way to achieve the same result isn’t lazy, it’s smart. We say important achievements are, “hard-earned”. Often, when we accomplish something important, we say it took, “blood, sweat, and tears”. It makes sense that this is your first instinct. The most important things don’t have to be the hardest to achieve. The first thing you must do to achieve effortless results is to invert your thinking. Here are three simple things you can do today to get started.
